Harnessing the Healing Power of Music

July 2015

The value of music can never be underestimated.  When did you last whistle a tune, hum on the car journey, dance to the latest album?  Music can move, music can inspire, music can unite and that expression of unity through diversity can be felt across the world.  Whether the Masai Warriors chant on a misty morning, creating a tangible vibration through the earth, or whether the hauntingly rich sound of an Irish melody strains to be heard over the water, music has an effect on the listener and the performer.

When we worked with groups of refugees in Jordan, we found that music once again brought a smile to the faces of the children. It stimulated memories, it encouraged active participation and the sense of value and purpose shone through in the activity of music making.

Layla used to sing in her school choir in Aleppo. She also studied French, English and Science and misses the routine and the challenge of school life and learning. She is now a refugee in Jordan and performed with the Youth Choir in Jordan which we organised in conjunction with the Youth Center she attends.

We performed songs in Arabic and English and even managed some part singing. The health benefit of singing is widely understood and we used breathing exercises and calming techniques to train the youth prior to singing.
